A couple of weeks ago I received a phone call from my Dad with the news that “Mum has been run over by a bus”. In a terrible accident she was hit by a bus while walking across a pedestrian crossing and suffered extensive leg injuries. Fortunately for her and my family she was very lucky to not sustain any fatal injuries. After spending time in intensive care and undergoing five major surgeries for repairs to her leg she faces a long period of rehabilitation in Melbourne. On the bright side not many people live to tell the tale that they were run over by a bus!
Today my brother and I leave on our round the world adventure to the USA, South America, Spain and Thailand. The last couple of weeks have reinforced a few life principles;
- If you want to do something, like an overseas trip or some other life goal, don’t wait but set things in motion to make it happen. You never know when you will be hit by the metaphorical (or in my mum’s literal case) bus.
- Spend time with your family friends and loved ones and always let them know you care about them.
- When shit hits the fan your friends and family are there to help. Even if they can’t do anything to help it’s awesome to know they care.
While it will be tough knowing mum is in hospital while we spend our two months away her accident has reinforced making a lifelong goal happen is exactly what we should be doing right now. Our promise to her is that we will have a good time and we intend to live it up!
